MICRO-TRAINS NASA Series CLUB

If you would like to receive all NASA Series Cars you can sign up today.

We have three options to sign up to receive all of the cars in this series:

1) Receive each car shipped each month as they are released.

2) Receive one shipment after TWO cars have been released. A new shipment will be sent after every SECOND car is released.

3) Receive one shipment after THREE cars have been released. A new shipment will be sent after every THIRD car is releases.

- We must have a credit card on file. We cannot do this with payment by check or paypal.

- You will be charged in advance for each series shipment. For example if you sign up option #3 then when the first car is received by N Scale Supply you will be charged for 3 cars plus 1 shipping charge. When the third car arrives then a shipment will be dispatched to you. The next month with car #4 the process will repeat.

NOTE: Micro-Trains intends to release these cars each month, but as we have seen in the past they may occasional skip a month.

NASA Series Car #1
This weathered 50’ steel side, 14 panel, fixed end gondola with fishbelly sides is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Operating a captive fleet of railcars, NASA’s unique mission requires specially fitted cars to carry it out. This gondola is designed to transport up to three “SRM” end ring racks, used on the shuttle solid rockets, as well as general freight as needed at the Kennedy Space Center.

NASA Series Car #2
This 57’ converted TOFC flat car is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Originally built in 1952 as a Department of Defense 103-W tank car and used to store isopropyl alcohol, it was stripped to its frame and rebuilt into a 70-ton spacer car in 1995. Because NASA rocket components are so heavy, empty spacer cars help distribute the weight of the train to comply with bridge and track load restrictions.

NASA Series Car #3
This helium car was one of the heaviest railcars ever made. Built in 1961, these cars were initially used by the BLM to transport helium from mines in Texas. Later, they found their niche servicing NASA Titan rockets and the Space Shuttle up until the last shuttle flight in 2011.

NASA Series Car #4
This 56’ general service tank car is black with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1970 and transferred to NASA from the Department of Defense in August 1987, this tank car was used to store water in support of Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters up until the last shuttle flight in 2011.

NASA Series Car #5
This 57’ converted TOFC flat car is brown with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks.
Built in 1968, this car originally ran with JHTX reporting marks. In 1987, it was purchased from Railmark,
Inc and renumbered NLAX 127 and carries one of several restored MQU’s that were used during the Apollo
space flights.

NASA Series Car #6
This 50’ rib side box car with double doors and no roofwalk is blue with black door and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. NLAX 4005 was the only boxcar used by NASA in Florida. Used to transport awkwardly sized or weather sensitive materials, this boxcar often contained parts for locomotive maintenance or components for large projects on the railroad.

NASA Series Car #7
This 50’ steel side, 14 panel, fixed end gondola wtih low cover is synthetic red with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1966 by Ortner, this ex. Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific gondola was purchased by NASA in late 1984, and featured a removable cover. Used primarily for right-of-way maintenance, this gondola was retired in 2011 at the end of the Space Shuttle Program.

NASA Series Car #8
This 56’ general service tank car is white with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1982 for NASA, this was the first railcar purchased new by NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Originally used to transport Freon from Louisiana, NASA later used the car to hold water for firefighting purposes.

NASA Series Car #9
This 61’ bulkhead flat car is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. The only bulkhead flat car in the Kennedy Space Center system, this 170,000 pound capacity car was purchased from the Rock Island Railroad in 1984 and was used by NASA to transport large or awkward components in support of the Space Shuttle Program.

NASA Series Car #10
This 100-ton 3-bay open hopper with rib sides and coal load is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1979, this ex. Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific hopper was purchased by NASA in 1984, and was used to haul ballast and other aggregate materials for maintenance purposes along the Kennedy Space Center railroad right-of-way.

NASA Series Car #11
This 39’ single dome tank car is white with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. This 70-ton car was built from sections of old tank cars, and when completed, held approximately 15,000 gallons of water. It was initially used to chemically eradicate weeds along the NASA KSC right of way, but was later used as an auxiliary water source for firefighting.

This 89’ TOFC flat car is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. This flat car was created out of two wreck-damaged railcars, Southern Pacific 900317 and RTTX 159676, by the ATSF railway and was purchased by NASA in 1983. While under NASA employment, it was used to carry containerized equipment as a part of the “Langley Project,” a hypersonic wind tunnel program.

NASA Hydrogen Car
NASA purchased this 83 foot, 70-ton tank car new from Linde in 1965, which held 34,400 gallons of refrigerated liquid hydrogen for use in support of the Space Shuttle Program. Refrigeration equipment was housed in one end, along with a manway that provided access to the tank’s interior. This custom, ready-to-run car is a true multi-media project featuring a resin cast tank, laser cut components for the underframe, 3D printed bolsters and photo-etched deck and end railing. The car will come fully decorated and weathered with body-mounted Magne-Matic couplers.
