Built
in the 1980's by ACF®, the Coalveyor Bathtub Gondola operated in unit train
service to deliver coal to power plants. These cars were most often lettered for
the utility companies that leased and purchased them. Many are still in service
today. By the
year 2000, most Coalveyors had been in daily unit train service for nearly 20
years, and many continue on in this service today. However, several owners had
begun selling off their fleets to smaller leasing companies and railroads. Some
remained in unit coal train service, while others were placed in service hauling
scrap material, construction debris, and other refuse. As a result of this, Coalveyors
can now also be found in general freight service throughout the country. Our offering
of AEX, DLWR and MRMX represents a few of the companies operating these “scrap
service” cars today.
