Though this type of car is normally used for appliance shipment, this 60’ excess height box car with double plug doors and waffle sides is used to move auto parts instead. It is part of a 24-car fleet built by Berwick Forge and Fabricating in 1978. It is painted black with white lettering. The white bands on the ends signify that it is a ‘hi-cube’ box car. The ‘waffle’ pattern is an external wall support system that allows more room inside for internal belt rails, aiding damage-free delivery. Hi-cube box cars were developed to increase car capacity and better accommodate forklift loading. When a shipment is loaded into hi-cubes, fewer cars are needed.
