50' Steel Side Fixed End Gondola

This 50' steel side, 14 panel, fixed end gondola rolled out of Norfolk & Western’s shops in Roanoke, Virginia in September 1965. It was painted in the N&W scheme typical of the early 1960s—simple black with white markings. The class GB ‘mill’ gon has a 1,977 cu ft, 140,000 lb capacity, and carries scrap steel. It is equipped with Barber® roller bearing trucks. The caution stenciled on the side, ‘Do Not Hump’, prohibits the gravity routing of this car in hump yards. At the end of 1990, N&W became a subsidiary of Southern Railway and the conglomerated railroad renamed itself Norfolk Southern.
