These two 100 ton 3-bay open hoppers with rib sides are painted black with white lettering on sides and ends. They were built by Bethlehem Steel Car Co., Johnstown, PA in January 1971. 78000 road number series hoppers bore the second-generation C&O for Progress emblem. By piling coal high, C&O was able to utilize the entire 3,432 cu ft capacity of these class HT hoppers. From its humble beginnings in 1836 as the Louisa Railroad, the Chesapeake & Ohio, headquartered in Richmond, VA and Cleveland, OH, grew substantially over the decades until it was merged ultimately by CSX Transportation on August 31, 1987.
