In January 1971, when these 100-ton 3-bay hoppers with rib sides rolled out of Bethlehem Steels Johnstown, PA plant, they were headed for Penn Central. Five years later, in July 1976 they became the property of the newly established Conrail. The road numbers were kept the same but the cars were repainted in this scheme of box car red with white printing and the wheel on rails Conrail logo. Norfolk and Western developed this class H11a hopper from the class H39. By building the hopper six feet longer, and increasing the height as well, its capacity was raised to 3,418 cu ft. It became the standard for the eastern coal haulers through the 1960s and 70s becoming known as the standard eastern coal. |
