This ‘Safety Yellow’40’ ARA steel box car has an aluminum overlapping flat panel roof with plate end, 4-6-4 Youngstown door and vertical brakewheel. It runs on black Bettendorf trucks. Built in January 1925, #489546 wears the PRR Maintenance-Of-Way color scheme implemented in the 1950s. For the protection of the MofW crew, PRR changed from their standard MofW battleship grey to ‘MofW Safety Yellow’. Many of Pennsylvania’s X-29 boxcars lasted well into the 1990’s.
