When built, in September 1937, this 40 standard box car with single door was equipped for passenger service on The Canadian. It was used to haul bulk mail between Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, B.C. It was painted in this scheme of silver with maroon lettering to match the look of the passenger consist. C.P. did not consider it necessary to equip these mail service cars with high-speed trucks because of the slow pace the trains kept through the Canadian Rockies. Bettendorf trucks provided adequate service. CP 4901 was serviced in April 1967 at the roads Angus shops in Montreal.
