This 40’ standard box car, with Youngstown
door is painted boxcar red and sports the “The Route of Phoebe Snow”
logo and lettering in white. Built in December 1948 by American
Car and Foundry it was one of the first DL&W cars to use National
Type B-1 trucks. The DL&W promoted clean-burning Anthracite
Coal in it’s locomotives, greatly reducing coal soot in it’s passenger
trains. It’s passenger mascot, “Phoebe Snow” - a woman in a white
dress and white gloves - first appeared in advertising for the Lackawanna
Railroad in 1900 and was created to demonstrate the relative cleanliness
of it’s trains. |
