This aluminum 50’ standard box car with single Youngstown door runs on black Bettendorf trucks. In Feb. 1945, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific purchased 10 all-aluminum express box cars from Mt. Vernon Car Company. The cars were engineered by the Reynolds Metals Company of Chicago and made to a design approved by the A.A.R. Car Construction Committee. At the time, aluminum car bodies were thought to have high resistance to corrosion, a low center-of-gravity, and an increased potential load capacity. However, the aluminum box cars of the 1940s were not particularly successful and were not ordered during the 50s.
