This aluminum 40’standard box car with single Youngstown door displays the C&O® For PROGRESS Logo in black and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. The Second World War generated large aluminum sheet and plate stock capacities for military aircraft structures. As the lading masses went up, the car mass had to be reduced. The C&O® was one of the roads interested in experimenting with the transfer of the lightweight aluminum technology into the rail car business. It presented and helped address key issues of abrasion, corrosion and cost effectiveness. Aluminum has often reappeared since the early 1960s as a competitive material.
