This 40’ standard box car with plug door was built in March 1959, serviced in August 1972 and painted box car red with white lettering. The class XL box was part of a fleet of 100 cars that were assigned to haul high-end classes of merchandise—as indicated by the note to the left of the door, ‘specially equipped car.’ From the late 1960s to the early ’80s the ‘O’ in ‘Southern’ was painted green to accompany the road’s slogan, ‘Gives a Green Light to Innovation.’ The last release of this car was August 1980.
