In early 1953, the NH wanted to place an order with the Pacific Car and Foundry for 100 of these 40’ standard box cars with plug door. They realized they could save money by having them built with BAR’s 450 car order. The only catch was they would have to accept them in BAR’s ‘State of Maine Products’ scheme of red, white, and blue with blue and white markings. NH wanted the cars in box car red, but the additional $350 per unit would have negated their savings. They received these cars in mid-1953. In the late ’60s, NH repainted the cars in their originally desired box car red.
