This Pullman-Standard-built 40 standard
box car with double doors was delivered to the Seaboard Air Line in
July 1945. It is painted box car red and lettered in white. The SAL
slogan, The Route of Courteous Service, normally adorns the left side
of the car, but to accommodate the offset doors it is here painted on
the right. Before its merger with Atlantic Coast Line, and ultimately
with CSX, SAL operated from Virginia to Florida and west to Alabama.
SAL finds its roots in the 1832 charter of the Portsmouth and Roanoke
Railroad, which operated 80 miles of track between Weldon, NC and Portsmouth,
VA. (last released 4/73
