This 50' standard box car with plug and sliding door was part of a 50-car series, numbered from 81000 to 81049, that was built in January 1964. It was painted for the Nickel Plate Road in box car red with white lettering and logo. The 4,958 cu ft, 180,000 lb capacity box car was equipped with roller-bearing trucks and cushioned underframe. The Nickel Plate Road, officially known as the New York, Chicago & St. Louis, merged with Norfolk & Western in October 1964. By early 1986 all these cars were repainted in N&W’s paint scheme.
