This 40’ despatch stock car was built in the early 1920s and operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western. It was painted black with white lettering. The 3,526 cu ft, 80,000 lb capacity car rolled on Bettendorf trucks. In order to get optimum usefulness—and profit—out of stock cars, they were normally loaded with such commodities as rough lumber, coal, iron, etc. for the trip west after delivering livestock on the hoof to the east. With a direct route through the Rockies, D&RGW profited greatly from this arrangement.
