Soo Line Road #29628 40' Despatch Stock Car Part #MTL-35140 N Scale Supply Price: Reprint Release Date: November 2000
This 40 despatch stock car was built in 1927 and used on the west end of the Soo Line until about 1960. It is one of a 397-car fleet that was painted dark box car red and lettered in white. Number 29628 is equipped with Andrews trucks. In later years, the Soo had some of these cars fitted with wood panels to transport coal. Two types of stock cars dominated the on-the-hoof shipping lanes: this single deck for large animals, and a double deck for smaller animals and poultry. Both configurations could be found with or without water and feed troughs. Livestock was raised in the west then shipped to the mid-west stock yards for fattening. They were then sold or moved to the eastern slaughterhouses. |
