Lehigh Valley Road # L.V. 79003 40' Double-Sheathed Wood Box Car, 1½ Doors w/Vertical Brake Wheel Part #MTL-41020 N Scale Supply Price: New Release Date: December 2000
When this 40' double-sheathed wood box car with one and a half doors was built on October 30, 1916, it was painted box car red with white stenciling on sides and ends. Designed to accommodate the shipment of automobiles, it had a 2,946 cu ft, 80,000 lb capacity, and a door opening of 126". It rolled on Andrews trucks and also featured a steel underframe and fishbelly sides. From the 1920s to the passing of the steam era, automobiles were shipped in box cars since steam locomotives could cause damage to such cargos. Many of these auto carriers lasted into the 1950s, but with the growth of diesel pulling power, lighter weight open carriers began to be used. |
