This 50 gondola with fishbelly sides and drop ends is one of a group of 275 class GB gons manufactured in the late 1950s. It is painted black with white stenciling. At 1,996 cu ft capacity, #715 was used by the Algoma Central to haul iron ore and wood products from Canadas northern wilderness to Sault Ste. Marie the railroads corporate headquarters. Originally established for ore and wood hauling in 1899, the Algoma Central operated for nearly 100 years before being sold to Wisconsin Central in 1995. This gondolas design improvements included light weight metal alloys, rib sides wood flooring, and drop ends to accommodate loads longer than the car. |
