This 34 wood sheathed caboose with slanted cupola is painted yellow and is fitted with red end ladders. The lettering is also red. UP cabooses were box car red until 1947 when, for increased visibility, all were repainted yellow. Until the early 1980s the caboose was a universal presence at the end of freight trains. They provided office, quarters, and tool & supply space. Via the cupola (the raised observation area on the roof) the crew monitored conditions on the train. In the 1970s the caboose began disappearing. It was replaced by end-of-train (EOT) or Flashing Rear End Device (FRED) monitoring devices that provided train-end reporting formerly done by conductors.
