In 1957 General American built this 52’ 2” all steel riveted express refrigerator car, with plug door for the Railway Express Agency. Their 7400 road series, was painted in REA’s most common color scheme; medium green with black underframe, white lettering, and red and white logo. This 65,800 lb capacity car rolls on Commonwealth BX trucks designed for high-speed baggage and express service. Number 7870 was used to haul perishables, express packages, and mail. REA had agencies in most stations where “less-than-carload” (LCL) freight could be transferred to trucks for delivery. This road series is distinguished from the 6100-6599 series which were welded, not riveted.
