w/Composite Sides
Part #MTL-57070 N Scale Supply Price:
Reprint Release Date: October 2001
The American Car & Foundry in Huntington, West Virginia built this 33 twin bay hopper with composite sides in February 1944. It was painted for C&O in black with white lettering. World War II created an increased demand for coal, so in 1943 the Office of Defense Transportation and War Production authorized the construction of composite hoppers to conserve steel and keep up with demand. A 3000-car fleet was built with steel braced wood sides, saving many pounds of steel per hopper. In 1953, the Raceland, Kentucky shops rebuilt most of these cars into all-steel hoppers, retaining the outside bracings.
