50' Composite Gondola, Drop ends w/Straight Sides

This 50' composite gondola with drop ends and straight sides was built in December 1937. It is painted box car red with white lettering. The 2,582 cu ft, 140,000 lb capacity gon was equipped with 70-ton Bettendorf trucks. By the late 1930s and through WWII, the 50’ gondola had become the preferred design for the railroads serving the Northeastern industrial plants. The ribs provided protection from outward pressures from heavy loads, and wood replaced steel wherever it was practical.
