Bay Window Caboose
In
1968, Southern Pacific subsidiary Cotton Belt (officially the St. Louis Southwestern
Railway) received 20 cabooses from International Car Company. These were the first
SP cabooses to use 50 ton trucks, starting the C-50 series of cabooses. In 1970,
1972, and 1974 SP returned to International Car for 181 cabooses, plus 16 for
Cotton Belt in three groups. For the next four years, SP did not acquire any new
cabooses. Instead, 207 older cabooses were rebuilt by the Sacramento Shops. In
1978, SP, again, bought cabooses. By then, International Car was a division
of PACCAR (formerly Pacific Car & Foundry). The 50 cars of the C-50-7 class
were built at the same Kenton, Ohio plant as the previous C-50 series cars. In
design, they were similar to the previous C-50 cars with only a few changes. Their
paint differed by having the roof painted the car body color and the road name
was moved to the right of the bay window, and they featured an axle-end generator
connection. They were also the first new cars in the 4000 series. In 1979, 50
cars of the C-50-8 class were delivered, with some minor detail differences when
compared to the earlier C-50-7 cars. In 1980, the C-50-9 class of 75 cars was
delivered. The C-50-9 class was unique in that they were delivered without any
windows in the car sides, in order to increase crew safety and reduce repair costs.
They were also the last group of new cabooses delivered to SP. SP car classification,
such as C-50-7, indicate the type of car (C for caboose), the capacity
of the trucks (50 tons), and the sequential order number (7). Class Road Numbers

shop-built bay-window cabooses, the CA-11 represents the last
newly-built caboose
ordered by the Union Pacific. Not having to climb ladders into
a cupola, having features like an ice box, National Swing Motion
trucks, and cushioned
couplers, the ride was compared to the best passenger cars in
term of crew comfort.

Within a few years, UPs CA-11 fleet began to receive modifications
based on crew feedback. External changes included the L-angle
porch supports
being enclosed to reduce injuries, extra grab irons were added
around the doors, steps were changed to reduce fatigue, and
walkway lights were
shielded to protect night-vision from the bay-windows.

Additional CA-11a prototype features
Many CA-11 cabooses continued life as shoving platforms; their
large porches ideal for a comfortable and protected position
for such an operation.
The long reversing maneuver required for this Fresno, CA based
caboose encountered many dangerous road crossings. In 2008,
it was restored
with a slight paint scheme variation and the addition of headlights
(non-functioning on the model), air horn, and roof-mounted bell.

Union Pacific modified a total of five CA-11 cabooses to serve
as Snowbuses. Two of these had their porches fully
enclosed for this assignment.
These cars were equipped with MU and signal hoses as they were
positioned in the middle of back to back locomotives which amounted
to the entire
train. The Snowbus would ferry crews to locations otherwise
unreachable in the worse weather. Recently, 25809 was included
in 2023s Big Boy
#4014 excursion train.

Union Pacific began selling off low-traffic branches in the
late 80s. The INPR was formed to continue service in Eastern
Oregon and the Western
edge of Idaho, interchanging with the Union Pacific. They acquired
three ex-up CA-11a cabooses for their operations in the early
1990s.
