Monon formed an X with routes from Chicago to Indianapolis and from Michigan City to Louisville with the axis in Monon, IN. They merged into L&N in 1971 after that road bought the eastern half of C&EI, effectively bypassing Monon 2 years earlier. Monon moved significant amounts of architectural limestone and marble (on flats and gons) while lessor grade lime was used to make cement which was carried in these bright red (or similar gray) covered hoppers.
