This box car red 40’ standard box car with single Youngstown door and no roofwalk has large white “Canada Manitoba” and buffalo with white lettering and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. These “Buffalo Boxcars” were used to haul grain to Churchill and Thunder Bay, Manitoba. Originally built as newsprint cars, they were converted in 1987-88 to carry grain under a program financed by the Canadian and Manitoba governments. CN discontinued use of these boxcars in 1996 after successfully using hoppers for grain service on the line, which crosses soggy muskeg (bogs) and numerous wooden trestles and had previously banned the use of the heavy hoppers. |
