This red 50’ standard box car with double
Youngstown doors and no roofwalk runs on black roller bearing trucks. The “Annie
and Mary,” as it was affectionately called, started in 1854 as the Union Wharf
and Plank Walk Company to provide access over the mud flats near Arcata to ocean
going shipping. The railroad was eventually extended 7½ miles from Arcata
to the Northern Redwood Company mill at Korbel. During the lumber boom of the
1950’s, the A&MR served fifteen shippers on its 7½-mile railroad, enough
to place the road among the highest paying railroad properties per mile in the
United States. The corporation was purchased by Simpson Lumber Co. in 1960, shut
down and abandoned on May 24, 1985, and finally sold to Eureka Southern Railroad
in 1988. It is now part of the North Coast Railroad. |
