This box car red 50’ gondola
with fishbelly sides, drop ends and railroad tie load, bears the
white Conrail logo and lettering. It runs on black Bettendorf trucks.
Conrail began operation April 1, 1976. It took over the railroad
properties and operations of 6 bankrupt eastern railroads: 1. Central
of New Jersey, 2. Erie Lackawanna, 3. Lehigh Valley, 4. Reading,
5. Penn Central, and 6. Lehigh & Hudson River. In June 1999,
the Conrail era ended when CSX Transportation® and Norfolk Southern
acquired Conrail and split its assets.
