This
red 39’ single dome tank has white lettering, white ‘Mobilgas’
logo and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. Originally built in
1926, and shopped in August of 1947, WSRX 228 is wearing the
red Mobilgas paint scheme. WSRX were the reporting marks for
Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. Inc., from 1938 through 1947. In 1931,
Socony Oil, a spin off from the 1911 breakup of the Standard
Oil Trust, merged with Vacuum Oil. In 1955, Socony-Vacuum became
Socony Mobil Oil Co. and in 1966, simply Mobil Oil Corp. A decade
later, the newly incorporated Mobil Corporation absorbed Mobil
Oil as a wholly owned subsidiary.
