This 40
standard box car with single Youngstown door, no roofwalk and
tall ladders is painted blue with black and white herald and black
lettering. It was built in December 1951, servced in June 1975,
and runs on Bettendorf trucks. When rebuilt,
this box car had its roofwalk removed, but the ladders were left
full length. Originally built in December 1951 by the United States
Railway Equipment Company (USRE) located in Washington, IN, this
car was from the 21000-22999 series. The 737-car fleet was given
a new road sequence and painted Rock Island blue with lettering
in black on the sides and ends. By the mid-1970s, all roofwalks
were to be removed and cars with and without running boards were
seen together through the 1980s. Freight cars with full-length
ladders, like this had yellow and black stenciling near the ladders
which read Keep off Roof, No Running Board. |
