These
40’ drop bottom gondolas with side extensions are painted box car red with large
white ‘SP&S’ letters and white stenciling. They carry wood chip loads and
run on Bettendorf trucks. The Pressed Steel Car Company originally built this
group of gondolas in 1948 for the D&RGW. The 1950s saw the rapid development
of the paper industry in the Pacific Northwest. As a result, the SP&S began
purchasing the second-hand drop bottom gondolas and adding wood side extensions
to increase the capacity. They were acquired and converted between August 1964 and
1965, and numbered into the 22400-22474 series. |
