Painted UP brown and lettered in Armour Yellow on sides and ends, this 50’ steel side, 14 panel, fixed end gondola with low cover was originally built in April of 1953. #229606 was rebuilt and renumbered in November 1957 at Omaha along with 9 other gons for steel plate loading. It is less expensive and time consuming to load such cargo into a car of this type with a crane than into a conventional box car. These class G-70-3 covered gondolas have a capacity of 130,000 lbs. with 1985 cubic feet.
