COMMONWEALTH TRUCKS
ATSF built this heavyweight depressed-center
flat car at their own shops in Topeka, Kansas in March 1953. It is the
only such flat car ever owned by the road. It is painted box car red
with white lettering. The depressed center configuration makes it possible
for the railroad to haul taller loads. The class FT-x flat has a 250,000
lb capacity and is equipped with Commonwealth, six-wheel trucks. These
trucks (introduced in the 1940s) are strong, light weight, and versatile,
providing a smoother, faster, and more reliable ride for freight and
passengers on Americas Rails.
