These 89 tri-level
open auto racks are painted Santa Fe red with white Santa Fe
Circle/Cross & Auto-Veyer placard
on left, Super Shock Control in yellow and white
on right placard and white lettering. They run on black Barber®
roller bearing trucks. AT&SF tried using the term auto-veyer
for their auto racks, but the term never caught on. These cars
also proudly declare their Shock Control equipment for providing
a smoother ride for their cargo. These tri-levels were used
for autos, while the bi-level auto racks were typically used
for transporting trucks and larger cars. Open rack cars such
as these gradually became extinct due to the problems with damage
and vandalism while in transit. However, they were greatly responsible
for securing a vast amount of the automobile delivery traffi
c that had been previously lost during the box car era.
