This
50’ U.S. Army kitchen car is painted Pullman Green marked with red crosses on
white on the sides and roof. A caduceus flanks the side of the door. It was built
between 1943 and 1946 by American Car & Foundry in Chicago, IL, and runs
on Allied Full Cushion trucks. Upon America’s entry into the war in late 1941,
Defense Plant Corporation contracted with American Car & Foundry for 800 troop
kitchen cars and 40 hospital cars. They were operated by Pullman Company and
assigned to the Transportation Corps or Medical Department of the Army Service
Forces. |
