This SAL class B-5 represents a variation of the proposed 1923 ARA 40' steel box car design. Originally built as outside braced box cars September of 1930, this group of 800 cars were then rebuilt September of 1952 when they neared the end of their service lives. #14900 is equipped with the 4-6-4 Youngstown door and Andrews truck. It is painted box car red with white lettering on the sides, ends and doors. This series were the last painted in the 'Orange Blossom Special' scheme.
During the 20s, the American Railway Association attempted to update the USRA standard freight car designs. Most freight cars were custom-built with each railroad either designing its own cars from the rails up or at least employing its own preferences concerning ends, roof, doors and other distinct parts. It was an expensive approach that rendered new cars more costly and complicated to maintain and repair. Standardization of production was needed, but the railroads were not ready. Though no steel-sheathed box car was officially authorized as an ARA standard design, the Pennsylvania Railroads X29 was cloned similarly by a number of other railroads. No consensus was reached on standard designs for steel-sheathed cars until the 1930s.
