These 43’ Ortner three-bay rapid discharge open
hoppers are painted light gray with black “Conrail Quality” logo and black lettering.
Built in January 1979 by Ortner Freight Car Company of Cincinnati they were serviced
in May 1984 and ran on black Barber® Roller Bearing trucks. One of the final
classes of hoppers on Conrail, the H1K was often used in ballast service out of
the old Wimpy Minerals quarry in Palmyra, PA. Most of the three-bays were owned
by and in captive service of construction & utility companies, traveling in
unit train fleets used for the transport of heavy material like stone aggregate,
iron ore or limestone. |
