#97947 was built September of 1946 by Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Company. Painted black with white lettering, this steam/diesel era 40' standard box car with single door wears the red and yellow 'Overnight' scheme logo. Overnight cars were first placed in service October 22, 1935 between San Francisco and Los Angeles handling less-than-carload (LCL) merchandise in coordination with the trucking business. Train stops were kept at a minimum by switching out cars at only a few 'break-bulk' points where shipments were transferred from rolling stock to company-owned trucks and hauled to intermediate stations.
