Because Western Pacific's passenger route went through the scenic Feather River Canyon, the slogan "The Feather River Route" was adopted and transferred over to its freight equipment. In September 1952, Pullman-Standard put two 40' standard box cars with Superior doors on the WP to test a new cushion underframe they had developed. The cars came to the WP in solid orange with black lettering and a large silver feather, as well as small silver feathers running along the car sides. WP purchased the cars in 1960, but never repainted them.
