This 30 box car with single door is box car red with white lettering. The railroad had a fleet of 60 cars in the 8500, 8600, and 8700 road number series that were rebuilt in 1938. The Rio Grande Southern was a 162-mile line that meandered between Durango and Ridgeway, CO. Built by Otto Mears in 1891, the railroad prospered until 1893 when the D&RG gained control. The RGS continued to exist on paper until the last train ran on Dec. 27, 1951. The road is known for its 1931 galloping geese - motor cars that were built from Buick and Pierce-Arrow parts.
