Built December of 1952 by Pullman-Standard, this
40' standard box car with single door is from Lot #8060, a 251 car fleet.
Painted box car red and lettered in white, the logo symbolizes a variety
of elements: the circle is a car wheel and the horizontal line represents
a rail. The 'M' symbolizes two teepees with an arrow head above. Monon
is an Indian word meaning Swift Running."
Prior to WWII, Pullman-Standard Manufacturing Company tried a variety
of designs for the 40-foot box car. The first PS-1 was delivered November
of 1947. The PS-1 box car accomplished the major goal for the company
which was to have a lightweight design making extensive use of arc welding
as the primary construction technique. The PS-1 box car was the easiest
of all to keep rolling and earning revenue because the required parts
for major overhauls were furnished by Pullman-Standard in the form of
fabricated sectors. The PS-1 design was in service beginning in 1947
and still around in the late 80s.
