Number CNJ 25039 is one of a 200-car fleet of 50' standard box cars with double doors and without roofwalks. The cars were built in December 1941 for Norfolk and Western. In 1969, CNJ acquired the fleet from N&W. When the cars were serviced at CNJs Elizabeth Port, NJ Transit shops, in October 1969, they were painted box car red with white stenciling. The roofwalks were removed but the side and end ladders remained, facilitating the need for the stenciled warning, Stay Off Roof. CNJ, headquartered in New York, NY, started life in 1847 as the Somerville & Easton Railroad.
