In November 1966 this 50’ flat car with fishbelly side and side mount brake wheel was rolled out of Union Pacific’s Omaha, Nebraska shops. It is painted UP Armour yellow with ‘Union Pacific’ and ‘Cushioned Load’ in red. The data is stenciled in black. This 154,000 lb capacity car, one of 250 class F-70-14 flat cars, rides on roller bearing trucks. Flatcars have been a ubiquitous presence in the history of rail freight systems. This one is representative of general-purpose flat cars with a capacity of less than 200,000 pounds. UP 58522 has a simple straight deck with a minimal amount of load securing equipment. Flat cars with more complex load securing devices are considered special-service flats.
