Built in July of 1928 by ACF for North Western Refrigerator Line Company, #8607 is typical of refrigerator car construction of the time period. This 40 double-sheathed wood reefer with vertical mount brake wheel has gray sides, box car red roof and ends. The Priebe logo is painted in white, red and blue and the North Westerns ball-and-bar emblem is red and black with white letters. The end reporting marks are white with the lettering on the sides in black. Priebe & Sons, operating 52 packing plants in the midwest, leased eight of these cars until billboards were outlawed in the mid 1930s. These refrigerator cars, equipped with end ice bunkers, made it possible to ship perishables without spoilage, and consists of 100 or more cars were often seen traveling cross-country. These cars were among the last to be rebuilt with steel, as wood offered the best insulation.
