52' 2" Riveted Steel Express Reefer w/Plug Door

This 52’ 2” riveted steel express reefer with plug door was built by ATSF in June 1953 at their West Wichita shop. It was originally leased to REA Express and painted in their colors (MTL #52030), but in 1969 it was repainted in this Santa Fe scheme of orange with black lettering and large circle-cross herald, after the lessee was forced to release all of their express cars back to the railroads that owned them. The 89,000 lb capacity car is equipped with commonwealth BX express trucks built by General Steel Industries. These trucks were designed for freight and baggage cars, which ran with high-speed passenger trains.
