This 61' 8" bulkhead flat car was built in September 1975 and painted MRL blue with white stenciling at the Burlington Northern shops in October 1984. On October 31, 1987, MRL began taking over portions of BN. They repainted the cars but chose not to change the reporting data. MRL carries paper, forest products, and grain. The bulkhead flat car was a versatile, high volume building materials car. Bulkheads provided longitudinal load containment with unlimited access to the loading platform. The standard bulkhead required staggered lumber packages so they could be banded together to form a solid unit on each side of the car. Later developments of this design resulted in the center beam flat car. An improved tie-down system, including winches and polymer corner protectors, reduced damage due to product movement, and created safer working conditions.
