This 33’ twin bay hopper with offset sides is Monon brown, displays the “The Hoosier Line” logo and lettering in white and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. The Hoosier State’s home road, the Monon, originated in 1847 as the Albany & Salem. Monon is an Indian word meaning “Swift Running”. Through mergers and name revisions, the line became the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (C.I.L.) in 1897. The road’s mainline resembled an X with the Chicago-Indianapolis line crossing the Michigan City-Louisville line intersecting at Monon - for that reason the nickname was given: ‘Monon Route’. In 1956 the line’s official name changed to the Monon nickname and MON® reporting marks. The Monon merged into the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1971 as the L&N’s Monon Division., and some of the former Monon right of way is still operated today by CSX Transportation®.
