The Fruehauf Trailer Company built SFTZ 904078, a 40’ trailer. In early 1976, owner, ATSF, painted it to celebrate America’s Bicentennial. On its white base it sports the American flag and the standard blue and yellow herald which ATSF used on its TOFC trailers. This trailer exemplifies the highway-to-rail trailer technology that has become an increasing part of both transportation industries in recent history. As reflected in the MTL models, the trailers feature a movable wheel set, allowing operators to adjust their vehicle’s wheelbase for maneuverability. By the early 1960s, the 40’ trailer had become the standard for cross-platform shipping, and the railroads, using TOFC flat cars to haul the trailers, began regaining their competitive edge on trucking. In the ’80s longer trailers and flat cars were introduced to increase capacity and competitiveness.
