From a 175 car fleet, #1796 was built at the Santa Fe Topeka shops February 1962 as class Rr-71. This 51 3-3/4 rib side mechanical reefer was painted reefer orange with aluminum roof and a dark blue door. The Mechanical Temperature Control logo on the door is white and all the lettering is black on the sides and ends. Trane Detroit Diesel motors ran the refrigeration equipment. This 122,000 pound capacity car wore Barber® roller bearing trucks. The small circle-cross heralds, used on all Santa Fe cars, were hi-reflection devices placed at automobile headlight height. Santa Fe changed the reporting mark code in 1953 on all refrigerator despatch cars. The letters SFR stood for Santa Fe Refrigerator. On this car, the last letter, C, was the code for Mechanical Refrigerator car equipped with adjustable load dividers (RPL). The large plug-type door enabled forklift access.
