When built in August 1960, this 50' standard box car with plug and sliding door, and without roofwalk was part of a 500-car fleet, which was originally equipped with roofwalks. When serviced in September 1978 at the road’s Topeka shop, the roofwalks were removed, but the ladders were left. The car was painted ATSF intermediate red with white lettering. Number ATSF 49635 is a class FE-31 box car designating it for furniture service. Other markings include a ‘U-1’ inspection stencil, certifying that the unsafe U-1 wheels were removed, as well as the warning ‘Keep off Roof—No Running Board’ (required after removing the roofwalk).
